Chief Executive Officer, President
If I had to pick one word to describe 2019, it would be quality.
In 2019, Stanford Health Care had a remarkable year for quality and safety performance, joining an elite group of only five AMCs nationwide with top rankings from Vizient, The Leapfrog Group, U.S. News and World Report, and CMS.
These recognitions were hard-earned, and I know that they would not have been possible without the leadership, collaboration, and excellence of our outstanding nursing staff.
The nursing team at SHC is unlike any other in the nation. Our patients are cared for by more board-certified nurses with doctorate and master’s degrees than almost anywhere else.
In addition to being academically accomplished, SHC nurses also raise the bar when it comes to patient care. Through your daily work, you embody the American Nurse Credentialing Center’s Magnet Model, Stanford Health Care’s Professional Practice Model, and Jean Watson’s Caring Science Theory.
The evidence of this is in our many 2019 accolades. But perhaps most importantly, it shows inside our new hospital, where SHC nurses played a critical role in shaping the care experience that our patients will benefit from for generations to come.
Looking forward to 2020, new investments in nursing will enhance those contributions. In 2019, we created a new associate chief nursing officer position for ambulatory services, added several hundred new advanced nurse practitioner positions, expanded clinical and interprofessional roles and these are just a few of the exciting things highlighted in our annual report.
2020 is an especially notable one for nursing. To commemorate the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, the widely recognized founder of modern nursing, the World Health Organization has named 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. The designation reminds us of the critical role nurses play at every level of care—both at SHC and across the globe.
It is just one of the countless reasons I am grateful for the work that you do. Thank you for making 2019 such a great success and for making Stanford Health Care the special place that it is.
